The Lexicologist's Handbook by Dane Cobain

I love discovering a word I have never come across before. Sometimes it is the sound of it that catches my attention. Sometimes it is the meaning, especially when it describes something I recognise but have never quite had the words for.

That interest is why I signed up for daily emails from Word Guru and enjoy following Tom Read Wilson’s Word of the Day on Instagram. I find it fun and satisfying to learn something new, even if it is a word I might not have many opportunities to use.

When Dane Cobain offered to send me a copy of The Lexicologist’s Handbook, I was excited to see what I would discover inside.

Discovering Unusual Words

The Lexicologist’s Handbook introduced me to plenty of unfamiliar words, alongside others I recognised but had forgotten.

I enjoyed reading the definitions and examples. Discovering a word is interesting in itself, but seeing how it can be used helps me understand it more clearly. I found myself continuing through the pages because I wanted to know what would come next.

Some words were completely new to me. Others gave me that small moment of recognition when something I had once known came back. Both were part of the pleasure of reading this book.

What I Enjoyed About the Writing

I appreciated how clearly Dane Cobain explained unusual and sometimes complex words. I did not feel that I needed specialist knowledge to enjoy the book or understand what I was reading.

For me, that accessibility mattered. I am interested in language because I enjoy it, and I wanted the book to feed that curiosity without making it feel like work.

The range of words also kept my interest. Even as someone who regularly enjoys learning new vocabulary, I found plenty that I had not encountered before. It reminded me how much there is still to discover.

Finding Comfort in Reading With Chronic Illness

Living with chronic illness means that reading can offer more than entertainment for me. Sometimes it gives me something absorbing to focus on when my symptoms are taking up too much of my attention.

The Lexicologist’s Handbook provided that welcome distraction. Exploring the words and their meanings gave my mind somewhere else to go for a while.

It did not change what I was dealing with, but I valued having something interesting to get lost in. There is comfort in spending time with a book that follows an interest I have enjoyed for years.

A Book I Wanted to Share With My Child

As I read, I also thought about my child. They enjoy reading and writing and have their own curiosity about words, so I could imagine them finding plenty to explore in this handbook.

I liked the thought of sharing the words that caught my attention and discovering which ones interested them. I would not want to turn that into a lesson. For me, the enjoyment comes from following our curiosity and seeing where it takes us.

I had not yet recorded their experience of the book when I wrote my original review, but it was certainly one I wanted to share with them.

My Overall Thoughts on The Lexicologist’s Handbook

The Lexicologist’s Handbook earned its place on my bookshelf because I enjoyed what I found inside. It introduced me to new words, reminded me of forgotten ones and explained them in a way I found clear and engaging.

I would recommend it to someone who enjoys language and wants to explore beyond their familiar vocabulary. My own pleasure came from discovering something new and remembering how satisfying that can be.

I received a copy of The Lexicologist’s Handbook from Dane Cobain for this review. These are my own thoughts and reflect my experience of reading the book.
