I have always loved the way fragrance can change the atmosphere of a room. Candles are lovely, but I only burn them when the children are not at home, which is not very often. Reed diffusers offer a simple alternative because they can scent a room throughout the day without a flame.
Why I like reed diffusers
A reed diffuser can be both practical and decorative. The fragrance oil travels up the rattan reeds and gradually disperses into the room, so there is no need to light, spray or plug anything in. I have several around our home because they add fragrance while also looking attractive on a shelf, table or windowsill.
They are particularly useful in a busy family home. There is no naked flame to supervise, and a good diffuser can last much longer than a candle. I still place mine carefully, out of the reach of children and pets, and protect painted or polished surfaces from spills.
Choosing a fragrance for your home
The right scent depends on the room and the atmosphere you want to create. Fresh citrus fragrances can work well in kitchens and hallways, while floral or woody scents can make a living room or bedroom feel warmer and more relaxing.
I prefer fragrances that are noticeable without becoming overpowering. Bitter orange, bergamot and sandalwood make a lovely combination because the citrus notes feel fresh while the sandalwood adds warmth. It is the kind of balanced fragrance that can suit several rooms rather than being saved for one particular space.
My Culti Stile Reed Diffuser
The Culti Stile reed diffuser was one of my favourites. Its sunny, light fragrance combined bitter orange, bergamot and sandalwood, and it lasted for around three months in my home. I also liked its understated bottle, which worked as part of the room rather than looking like something that needed to be hidden away.
The retailer originally linked in this review no longer leads to the relevant product, so I have removed that outdated link. The diffuser itself remains a good example of what I look for: a balanced fragrance, attractive packaging and a scent that lasts without dominating the room.
How To Make A Reed Diffuser Last Longer
The number of reeds you use affects the strength of the fragrance. More reeds usually create a stronger scent but use the oil more quickly. Turning the reeds can refresh the fragrance, although doing it too often may shorten the life of the diffuser. I turn mine only when the scent begins to fade and use a tissue to avoid getting oil on my hands or furniture.
Position also matters. I keep diffusers away from direct sunlight, radiators and strong draughts because heat and moving air can make the oil evaporate faster. A stable surface in a room with gentle airflow usually works best.
A Simple Finishing Touch
Reed diffusers are an easy way to add fragrance and a decorative detail without making a major change to a room. If you are refreshing your space, you may also enjoy my post about how to give your home an entirely new look.
