Review: BRIO Horse Stable and Jumping Pack

BRIO has been part of our family for many years. I can still remember buying my eldest son his first BRIO wooden train track, and now, at 16 years old, he has long outgrown it – but the very same track is still being enjoyed by his younger brother and sister, Jacob, 6, and Summer, 3.

For me, that's one of the lovely things about BRIO. These are toys that can be played with for years and passed down from one child to another.

While BRIO might be best known for its iconic wooden railway, there's a much bigger world of toys to discover, with different sets and accessories that children can combine to create their own BRIO adventures.

We were sent the BRIO Horse Stable and Horse Jumping Pack to review, and they proved to be a lovely addition to our collection.

BRIO Horse Stable

The BRIO Horse Stable is a lovely size for little hands and opens out on hinges to reveal the play area inside.

There are six individual enclosures for the horses, along with upper storage areas on either side that are perfect for keeping the hay.

It's designed to look like a real little horse stable, with plenty of details to encourage imaginative play. The children can look after their horses, get them ready for a ride and create all sorts of stories around the stable.

• Small removable track piece

The track piece also allows the stable to become part of a larger BRIO world, which is particularly nice if your children already have BRIO railway sets and accessories.

BRIO Horse Jumping Pack

We also received the BRIO Horse Jumping Pack, which complements the stable brilliantly.

Children can create their own show jumping course, arrange the obstacles and then take their horses and riders around the course.

Our set included seven wooden obstacles, three horses, three riders, two spectators, two benches and a horse trailer.

There are plenty of pieces for children to arrange and rearrange, so they can create a different jumping course each time they play.

Summer and Jacob particularly enjoyed combining the Jumping Pack with the Horse Stable, giving their horses somewhere to live before heading out for another competition.

Lots of Imaginative Play

What I particularly like about BRIO toys is their simplicity.

There aren't lots of flashing lights, screens or complicated instructions. Instead, children are given the pieces and can decide for themselves what happens next.

One minute the horses might be competing in a jumping competition and the next they're back at the stable being fed and looked after.

Both sets encourage children to create their own little stories, and combining them with other BRIO toys opens up even more possibilities.

Toys That Last

Having owned BRIO toys for so many years, we've experienced first-hand just how well they can last.

The fact that toys I originally bought for my eldest son are now being played with by his younger siblings makes them feel particularly good value.

They're the sort of toys that don't necessarily belong to one particular age or stage. Children can find new ways to play with them as they grow, and they can easily be combined with other sets collected over the years.

What We Thought

The BRIO Horse Stable and Horse Jumping Pack were a big hit with both Summer and Jacob.

The Horse Stable provides a lovely base for caring for the horses and creating stories, while the Jumping Pack adds another element of fun with competitions, riders and obstacles.

Used together, the two sets gave the kids plenty of opportunities for creative and imaginative play – and they returned to them again and again.

For us, they're another example of why BRIO has remained a favourite in our family for so many years.

And who knows? Judging by how long our original BRIO train track has lasted, these might eventually be passed down to another generation too!
