Skinnies Silk Review for Eczema: My Personal Experience
Living with eczema has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. When I was younger, I experienced eczema across much of my body and on my scalp. As I got older, my eczema changed, and in my 30s I started experiencing it on my face too.
For me, eczema is not simply a little bit of dry or irritated skin. When it flares, it can be incredibly itchy, uncomfortable and painful, and finding clothing that doesn't make my skin feel worse has always been important.
When I was introduced to Skinnies, I was interested to find out whether their specialist garments could make a difference to my everyday comfort.
What are Skinnies?
Skinnies are specialist garments designed with people who have sensitive or eczema prone skin in mind. They are made using anti irritant yarn and feature seamless technology, which is designed to minimise friction against the skin.
The garments can be worn alongside emollient skincare, helping to keep the skin covered while allowing the emollient to remain against the affected areas.
For my review, I was sent a Silk Skinnies short sleeve vest, Silk Skinnies shorts and Skinnies Laundry.
My experience of living with eczema
Eczema has always been something I have had to manage, but when it appeared on my face in my 30s, I found it particularly difficult.
My face is probably the last place I would want eczema because, aside from the discomfort, I became very conscious of how noticeable the redness and irritation could be.
I would use makeup to cover the affected areas because I didn't feel comfortable going out with my skin looking so red and patchy. Unfortunately, this could sometimes become a vicious circle because the makeup could irritate my skin further.
The eczema on my body tends to affect the sides of my body, starting underneath my arms and continuing down towards my hips. My hips are often where I experience the worst itching.
Having lived with eczema for so many years, I have become quite used to the occasional itching and tingling. Most of the time I can almost ignore it, but when I have a flare up, it becomes much harder to forget about.
This is when I tend to reach for my emollient and give my skin some extra care.
Using Skinnies with emollient
The idea behind Skinnies was particularly interesting to me because the garments can be worn with emollient.
I applied my usual emollient to the affected areas before putting on the Skinnies garments.
The vest and shorts were very comfortable to wear, and I was pleasantly surprised by how soft they felt against my skin. Because they are seamless, there wasn't the usual concern about seams rubbing against already irritated areas.
For someone like me, that was a big plus.
I also found that the garments helped me keep my skin covered after applying my emollient, which made them particularly useful as part of my usual skincare routine.
Did Skinnies help my eczema?
For me, I did notice an improvement in how my skin felt while wearing the Skinnies garments.
The areas I was particularly concerned about appeared less red and, more importantly for me, felt more comfortable and less itchy.
Obviously, everyone's eczema is different and what works for one person isn't necessarily going to work for another, but I was genuinely pleased with my experience.
I also found the garments comfortable enough to sleep in.
That might not sound particularly exciting, but for me it says a lot. I am very aware of fabrics and clothing against my skin when my eczema is irritated, so being able to sleep wearing the Skinnies was a real positive.
Skinnies features
Some of the features that stood out to me included:
Seamless technology designed to reduce friction
Soft material designed with comfort in mind
Available in different colours
Designed to withstand repeated washing
Sanitized antimicrobial treatment
No silver used
Available in adult and children's sizes
Machine washable
Suitable for tumble drying
I particularly liked that Skinnies are available for children as well as adults. Finding comfortable clothing for children with eczema can be difficult, so having specialist options available for younger skin is useful.
My Skinnies Silk review
Overall, I was really impressed with the Skinnies vest and shorts.
The biggest thing for me was the comfort. When you have eczema, the last thing you want is clothing rubbing against already irritated skin, and I found the seamless design and soft fabric much more comfortable than some of the ordinary clothing I would normally wear.
I also liked being able to use the garments alongside my emollient. For me, this combination helped my skin feel more comfortable and less irritated during the time I was using them.
I even joked that if Skinnies made something suitable for the face, I would probably wear it! Obviously, that isn't what these garments are designed for, but that's how comfortable I found them.
My eczema isn't something that is going to disappear overnight, and I know that managing it is an ongoing process. However, finding something that makes my skin feel more comfortable is always worthwhile.
If you live with eczema or very sensitive skin and are looking for specialist clothing to wear alongside your usual skincare routine, Skinnies are certainly something I found worth trying.
Disclosure: Please remember that this is my personal experience and not medical advice. Everyone's eczema and skin sensitivity is different, so it's always sensible to follow advice from your doctor, pharmacist or other healthcare professional about managing your skin.
