Family Movie Night – Making Memories Together
I love a good family movie night.
There's something lovely about everyone getting together, choosing a film, preparing the snacks and settling down on the sofa for a couple of hours.
Watching television together has been part of family life for generations. While the way we watch films might have changed over the years, the simple pleasure of sitting down and enjoying something together hasn't.
And in our house, a movie night always means one thing – popcorn!
Our Family Movie Nights
There's always a little bit of excitement before one of our movie nights.
First comes the important decision of what we're going to watch, followed closely by deciding which snacks we're having. The boys insist that popcorn is an absolute essential, so there's always plenty of that to go around.
Then we all pile onto the sofa, get comfortable and settle down to watch the film together.
Of course, watching a film with Jacob and Summer also means answering approximately 101 questions before the credits roll!
But that's all part of the fun.
Movie nights aren't really about sitting silently watching a screen. They're about spending time together, laughing at the same things and creating those little family memories that often turn out to be the ones we remember.
When Nanny Joins Us
The kids particularly love movie night when Nanny comes over.
We don't get to have her around as often as we'd like, so when she joins us for dinner and stays to watch a film, it makes the evening feel that little bit more special.
And really, that's one of the nicest things about a family movie night – everyone can join in.
Children, parents and grandparents can all sit down together and enjoy the same experience, even if agreeing on which film to watch isn't always quite so straightforward!
Bringing Generations Together Through Film
This particular movie night came about after we heard about an initiative from Gracewell, a care home provider.
At the time, Gracewell organised regular movie nights at its care homes, with residents' families encouraged to come along and enjoy the evening together.
I thought it was such a simple but lovely idea.
A familiar film can spark conversations and memories, while the act of sitting down together gives families an opportunity to spend some relaxed time with one another.
To celebrate its movie night initiative, Gracewell sent us everything we needed to enjoy a movie evening of our own – including a copy of Pan, sweets and, most importantly according to the boys, plenty of popcorn.
Our Pan Movie Night
We hadn't seen Pan before, so everyone was excited to watch it.
Jacob was particularly keen because Peter Pan was one of his favourite stories at the time.
With our film chosen and snacks at the ready, we settled down together and enjoyed our family movie night – complete, naturally, with plenty of questions from the kids along the way.
But what I remember most isn't necessarily the film itself.
It's simply that we were all together.
Making Time for More Family Movie Nights
Our evening reminded me that we really should make time for family movie nights more often.
They don't need to be elaborate or expensive. Pick a film, make some popcorn, grab a few treats and get everyone together on the sofa.
Sometimes the simplest family traditions create the loveliest memories.
By the end of our movie night, the kids were already discussing what we should watch next.
And there was one other request they both agreed on – Nanny had to come round and join us again!
