How to Stop Losing Socks: My Battle With the Never Ending Odd Sock Problem

How to Stop Losing Socks blog graphic with paired socks in a laundry basket and tips to prevent missing socks.

My three boys and their odd socks drive me crazy.

If you've ever wondered how to stop losing socks, you will probably understand exactly where I'm coming from. Odd socks are a real bugbear of mine, and after years of doing what feels like endless loads of washing, I still cannot work out where all the missing socks disappear to.

In our house, with three boys, I have what feels like hundreds of odd socks.

Okay, hundreds is probably a slight exaggeration, but you get my drift.

There always seems to be another sock without its partner. I can put a full load of washing in the machine, carefully hang everything out to dry, fold it all up and somehow still end up with a collection of lonely socks.

Where do they go?

I'm convinced there must be a secret sock dimension somewhere that only washing machines know about.

The Never Ending Odd Sock Problem

I actually have a basket specifically for odd socks.

Whenever I find a sock without its matching partner, it goes into the basket. The idea is that eventually the missing sock will turn up and I'll be able to reunite the pair.

Sometimes it works.

Most of the time it doesn't.

Every so often I'll go through the basket and try to match everything up. I'll find a few successful pairs and feel like I've achieved something amazing, only to discover that there are still loads of socks left with no obvious partner.

I give them a couple of months.

If their missing partner hasn't returned by then, I eventually give up and they go in the bin.

It's not ideal, but there comes a point when you have to accept that some socks are never coming home.

So, How Do You Stop Losing Socks?

Over the years I've tried a few different tricks to keep our socks together and stop them disappearing.

Some have worked better than others!

Peg Socks Together When They Are Drying

One of the simplest things I try to do is peg pairs of socks together when I hang the washing out to dry.

The idea is pretty straightforward.

If the two socks stay together while they're drying, surely they should make it safely back into the sock drawer together?

It does help, although it isn't foolproof.

Somehow socks still manage to escape their partners, and occasionally I end up with a peg attached to one sock and absolutely no idea where the other one has gone.

Still, it's worth doing if you're trying to keep socks together in the laundry.

Check Down the Side of the Sofa

This is a particularly important one in our house because Lewis has a really annoying habit of shoving his socks down the side of the sofa instead of putting them in the washing basket.

The washing basket is literally there.

But apparently the gap between the sofa cushions is a much better place to store dirty socks.

Every now and then I'll move the cushions and discover a little collection of socks hiding underneath.

It's like an archaeological dig, only instead of discovering something historically important, I find dirty socks.

Sometimes I even find socks I've been looking for.

It's amazing how many missing socks can turn up when you look in the places the children actually spend their time.

Check Around and Under the Boys' Beds

The boys' bedrooms are another place I always check when I'm trying to find missing socks.

Apparently, taking your socks off doesn't mean putting them in the laundry basket.

It means throwing them onto the floor.

Or under the bed.

Or beside the bed.

Or possibly anywhere other than the actual washing basket.

So whenever I'm tidying their bedrooms, I'll have a quick look around the beds. More often than not, I'll find at least one sock hiding somewhere.

And occasionally I'll find the matching sock to one that's been sitting in my odd sock basket for weeks.

That feels like a small victory!

Buy All the Same Colour Socks

This is probably my most practical solution for dealing with the odd sock problem.

Buy all the socks in the same colour.

If everyone has black socks, then at least it becomes much easier to find a pair.

You don't have to worry about whether one sock has faded slightly differently or whether you've accidentally put a navy sock with a black one.

The downside is that with three boys all wearing the same colour socks, I then have the problem of trying to work out whose socks belong to whom.

But honestly, I'd rather have a drawer full of identical black socks than a basket full of completely random ones.

At least when one goes missing, I know I can probably find another one that matches.

Why Do Socks Always Go Missing?

I've often wondered whether socks actually disappear in the washing machine or whether we're simply losing them somewhere along the way.

There are plenty of possible places for socks to disappear in a busy family home.

They can get left inside trousers, trapped underneath other clothes, dropped on the way to the washing basket or forgotten underneath beds.

And in our house, they can apparently also be pushed down the side of the sofa.

So perhaps the washing machine isn't entirely to blame after all.

Although I'm still keeping an eye on it.

Maybe I Should Use a Reward Chart?

I've tried all the usual methods, but perhaps I need to approach the problem differently.

Maybe I should add putting dirty socks in the washing basket to the boys' reward chart.

Instead of constantly saying:

"Please put your socks in the basket."

"Where is your other sock?"

"Why are there socks on the floor?"

"Please stop putting your socks down the side of the sofa!"

Perhaps a reward chart would actually work better than all the nagging.

Although, knowing my boys, they would probably expect a reward for finding the socks that they should have put in the washing basket in the first place!

My Best Tips for Keeping Socks Together

So, after years of dealing with the odd sock problem, these are the things that work best for us:

Peg pairs together when drying. It gives the socks less opportunity to separate.

Check the sofa. Especially if you have children who like to hide things down the side of the cushions.

Look under beds. Missing socks have a habit of turning up in bedrooms.

Use an odd sock basket. Don't throw a single sock away immediately. Its partner might still turn up.

Buy socks in the same colour. This makes matching them much easier.

Encourage children to use the washing basket. Easier said than done, apparently!

Do You Have Any Tips for Stopping Socks From Going Missing?

I'm sure I'm not the only parent who has an ever-growing collection of odd socks.

Maybe you have discovered the secret to how to stop losing socks, or perhaps you've found a brilliant way of keeping socks together during the washing process.

If so, I'd genuinely love to know.

For now, I'll continue with my odd sock basket, checking under beds and down the side of the sofa, and hoping that one day all those missing socks will finally find their way home.

Or perhaps I really should add it to the boys' reward chart instead of all the nagging?

Hmm...

If you've got any other tips for dealing with odd socks, please share them. I could definitely use some help!
