Shower Enclosures: Types, Features, and Costs Everything You Need to Know Before Buying

I recently had my shower upgraded and learned how important it is to consider not only aesthetic aspects but also the costs involved.

In this blog, I will share my experience navigating different shower enclosures and their costs, helping you make an informed decision about your bathroom makeover.

Different Types of Shower Enclosure

When it comes to shower cubicles, you have a number of choices available to choose from.

1-Quadrant Shower Enclosure

It has a relatively unique shape, featuring a curved frontage. While the backside is usually a standard square, the front has a half-circular design. This gives it the unique ability to fit into corners, between walls, or in compact spaces. That’s why many people choose this shape when installing a shower cubicle for their small bathrooms.

It is a space-saving option with relatively less projection into the bathroom. However, this does not mean you need to compromise on the shower experience. Such a design still allows for a spacious shower area. You can install a bifold or sliding shower door, depending on your preference. Moreover, these enclosures are a great fit for contemporary bathroom styles.

2-Offset Quadrant Shower Enclosure.

It is essentially a version of a quadrant shower cubicle with slightly more length on one side. The purpose is to provide additional space for the shower area. If you prefer an enclosure with a curved front and have extra room to spare, an offset cubicle can be an excellent choice. Aside from its extended size, it offers nearly all the same features as a standard quadrant enclosure. You can pair it with any type of shower door to suit your preferences.

Here we have a table highlighting the benefits of offset enclosures.

3-Rectangular Shower Enclosure

As the name suggests, these types of shower enclosures generally have four sides, with the lengths of two sides being equal and the widths also matching. Such enclosures typically fit against a wall and are preferred for medium or large bathroom spaces. They are often installed with hinged shower doors, though other door options are also possible. Rectangular enclosures are an excellent choice if you want a luxurious shower experience.

Here we have a table explaining the advantages of rectangular-shaped shower cubicle.

4. Square Shower Enclosure

It is a type of shower cubicle with equal lengths on all four sides. Such enclosures are an excellent option to fit against the wall and are usually suitable for medium to large bathrooms. They come in various sizes and are available in both frameless and framed designs. These enclosures work perfectly with sliding and bifold doors and can suit almost any bathroom. They are also ideal for fitting into corners, offering a spacious showering experience. If you want flexibility with installation options, this is the type of cubicle you should choose.

5-Walk-in Shower

An emerging trend in shower design is the walk-in shower . These are level with the floor and don’t have a door, making them appear more spacious and open. A walk-in shower area can be placed anywhere in your home, with simple glass panels enclosing the space. This makes them a suitable choice for the elderly or anyone with limited mobility. You can simply walk into the shower area without needing to open a door or take steps. In other words, it is a large, open space with walls made of glass or metal.

How Much Does It Cost to Install a Shower Enclosure in the UK

Overall costs of installing a shower enclosure in 2025 depend on various factors like type, size, and additional features. Walk-in showers are usually riced highly in comparison to other types due to the complexity of the design. Quadrant, square, and rectangular designs are usually more affordable; Frame materials are also an important factor that affects the cost. Semi-frameless or those with high-quality materials usually have higher costs. The type of shower door (pivot, bifold, and sliding) that comes with an enclosure or is sometimes ordered separately also influences the overall costs. Shower trays are usually ordered separately and may have added costs depending on the size and material. Acrylic shower trays tend to cost less than high-end stone or slate shower trays.
